According to the legend, Charlemagne decided to build the Monastir del Camp to thank the Virgin Mary who had allowed his army, exhausted after long victorious fighting against the Moors, to drink from the « Riu del Miracle » which runs through PASSA.
As early as 1116 and up until 1786, the priory was occupied for serveral centuries by an Augustin priesthood community. It was sold by Louis 16th to the JAUBERT DE PASSA family … The descendants of this noble family live and work in the Monestary. This remarkable site accommodates the national stud farm from March until June.
In 1862, Prosper Mérimée, when he was minister, listed the site as an historical monument. He was the friend of François JAUBERT DE PASSA: A man of learning (he inspired the Venus of Ille and Carmen), auditor at the State Council in Paris and President of the County Council of the Pyrenees-Orientales.
Situated in the heart of the Aspres and surrounded by large trees, the building ressembling a fortress is imposing, majestuous with its austere facade and its crenellated corner tower.
Guided tours of the priory followed by wine tasting of the priory wines in the old stables dating from the 17th century.
