In 1659, the Treaty of the Pyrenees led to the annexation of part of Roussillon to the Kingdom of France. Prats de Mollo became a border strong hold.
Dominating the town, the Lagarde fort was built to protect the new border and to look out over the entrance to Haut Vallespir.
The monument was built along the lines of a bastion style fortification, developed by Vauban, in order to resist the enemy artillery. It is perfectly integrated into the hillside.
Access to the monument is via a path or the galleries (a 15 minute walk), or by bus from the Tourist Office.
Several possibilities are open to you: An private visit, a guided tour, a story-telling visit or a show.
A show presenting military life at the end of the 18th century takes place throughout the summer.
