The first information available concerning the Dorres Baths dates back to the Middle Ages. However, prehistoric man has left traces of his existence in the area: Axes of polished stone, hollowed out stones, and even a magnificent dolmen in a neighbouring village. The Prehistoric men lived in shelters under rocks, did they enjoy the sensual delights of a hot bath in those times?
It is said that the Romans had already prepared the Dorres Baths even if remains date from the Middle Ages. At Escaldes, 500m away as the crow flies, the existence of the thermal baths dates back to the Roman period. At that time, the village people used the hot water from the Dorres spring for domestic use, without sophisticated installations.
The existing wash house in Dorres Baths was dug out of granite in 1842. Laundry was washed there, as well as skins and sheep's wool. Hot and sulphurous, this water was particularly good for washing raw sheep's wool.
The outside pools at Dorres offer nature and water lovers a relaxing moment of leisure in the middle of a sumptuous panoramic view. This hot suphur water spring bursts from the stone at 41°C. As you leave the baths, the sensation of gentle warmth persists for several minutes.
The two outside pools, the old wash house and the new pool, are accompanied by two antique baths cut into granite blocks of stone.
After prolonged physical effort (skiing, hiking …) a one hour bath in the thermal baths of Dorres will make all the aches an pains disappear; when you return from a walk in the mountains, the spring water will give hikers energy and vitality, thus confirming what the old people used to say about the baths and their numerous vertues...
