If there were an expression to describe the location of Vernet, it would be without doubt « surrounded by greenery ». Trees are omnipresent, covering over 80% of the town's territory, which goes from the flanks of the Canigou up to its summit.
The forests which surround Vernet are composed of a density of leafy trees and softwood trees. The arboretum of diverse varieties, sometimes rare, (330 types and varieties of remarkable trees, shrubs and climbers have been listed up to the present day), are mostly adult trees and are totally integrated in the town which makes for the originality of this area. More than 2500 types of tree have been identified in the parks and private gardens.
Vernet les Bains is also a departure point for botanical walks of several kilometres, or longer walks along the hiking paths which run through the Canigou mountain range, classified 'Great Site in France » and a reference worldwide for layers of vegetation.
