The priory is located at 560m on a plateau dominating the Têt valley in the heart of sumptious countryside. It was built in the 12th century by the canons of Saint-Sepulcre. Its facade faces west: It is typical of Romanesque art of the 12th century, comprised of perfectly cut and assembled granite stones. The smooth facades highlight the different materials used for its construction. The doorway is in pink marble from the quarry at Villefranche de Conflent.
Remains such as a dolmen and an oppidum, prove the existance of human presence as early as the neological era in the Arboussols area, to which Marcevol priory is has been attached since 1822.
During the French Revolution, it was sold as a national asset and became the centre of a large agricultural area. The buildings suffered from a lack of maintenance. In the 1970s, to save the priory from ruin, charitable building sites were set up by the Monasir de Marcevol Association and have become a place where great spiritual, artistic and theraputic movements of our era can meet. In 2001, the association became The Marcevol Priory Foundation which has been recognized as being of public interest and continues its vocation of welcoming the public, accommodating groups, school trips and cultural events.
