To the north of Formigueres, at Fontrabiouse, you can visit a grotto discovered in 1958 thanks to the extraction work of an onyx quarry. This cavity, at a temperature of around 6°C all year round, has been sculpted through time by water infiltration. Numerous cherts, of all sizes and all shapes, can be seen along the circuit.
Fine dripstones, like thin organ tubes, hang from the arched roof of the caves. The dripstone is the first stage in the formation of a stalactite. They grow longer by 2cm every ten to fifteen years.
The visitor will discover disques, draperies and columns which are formed by the groups of stalactites and stalagmites.
The grotto can be visited all year round (on reservation from September to June, without reservation in July and August.
