The small lake.
A site covering 16 hectares, representing 800 metres of beach, the small lake can be used for fishing from October to May.
During the school year, lower primary school children practice dinghy sailing with the help of U.D.S.I.S.T. (The inter-county union of schools and transport). It is 7 metres deep and reserved for swimming during the summer season, watched over by a team of lifeguards.
There are amenities by the side of the lake, events and dances are organized: The Aqua Club, The Lake Chalet, The Lake Pancake parlour, elastic-trampoline, the Galapagos, the Moorea, The Pine tree Pizza and The Regal'Eau are all open to you in the sweet heat of the lazy summer.
The large lake.
Open for carp fishing all year round, the large lake, of over 200 hectares, is 12 metres deep at the most. It is approximately 18 metres above sea level.
This body of water stocks 18 million cubic metres of water. Linked to the Vinça dam by the Perpignan canal (called « the Town Stream « or « Els Canals » in Catalan), it constitues a precious reservoir, not only for the watering of local agriculture lower down from the dam but also for the firefighting aircraft which fill up there each time that sadly there is a forest or scrubland fire, and in particular when the strong mountain wind, the Tramontagne does not allow for scooping in the sea. It irrigates the Saint Cyprien golf course, regulates floods and constitutes a potential reserve of drinking water for Perpignan and the surrounding area.
The carp is, without doubt, the « the king of the fish world ». Our Belgian, Dutch, British and German neighbours are all keen anglers. Some specimens, of over 20 kg, are often caught.
The lake is filled with pike-perch, perch, black-bass, pike, eel, tench, roach, rudd, European chub. The nautical cove, which is next to the town campsite « The Banks of the Lake - Les Rives du Lac » becomes an ideal place for fun: The Association of Nautical Sports is housed at the lake and proposes paddle boating, canoeing, kayaking and wind surfing.
An ecological reservation.
It spreads over 15 hectares and constitutes an exceptional breeding site from an ornithological point of view.
In the middle there is an island where waders, ducks and birds from the plain and from the sea nest. They have created here a quiet zone, which is listed, a fragile treasure that needs to be respected and preserved. The association Charles Flahaut, who care for the site have made up a full inventory of the wildlife. Thanks to the help of the Ornithological Group of Roussillon, an observatory has been set up to allow the discovery of the wildlife by the schoolchildren. A speciality of the reserve: The anodonta, (a freshwater mussel which can reach a surprising size). A problem, which has recently been dealt with: The presence of turtles - « clemydes lepreuses » rather than the « European pond terrapin » - who, because of their verocity, represent a real threat for the biocoenosis and seriously threaten to unbalance the existing ecosystem.
