In the Pyrenees-Orientals, there are more than eight hundred gilded wood altarpieces...
The Baroque art is characterized by freedom of form and the profusion of ornaments. This long period of art history starts at the end of the 16
th century to the 19
th century.
In the Catalan region in two centuries,
more than eight hundred altars in polychrome and gilded wood adorn hundreds of churches, several thousands of statues, paintings and sculptures are sheltered in these altarpieces.
The small Roussillon villages have real artistic treasures.
Josep Sunyer, master carver
Among the sculptors who worked at that time, the name of
Sunyer Josep is often call to mind notably with the altarpiece of
Prades, which is dedicated to the first apostles, Peter.
He also performs other monumental altarpieces, those of
Collioure and
Font-Romeu, and the altar of the Rosary for
Osséja and
Vinça.
And also painters
Paint shops are not to be outdone, they multiply and we have also left the testimony of hundreds of paintings. Dynasty "Guerra" incorporates the Baroque movement and Hyacinthe Rigaud meanwhile becomes painter at the king’s court.
