The wine from Roussillon

These wines that show our knowledge...

The department of Pyrenees Orientals produces 90% of the fortified wines (naturally sweet wine) of France.
The location of Roussillon, set in the foothills of the Pyrenees near the Mediterranean sea, made this province, a separate world characterized by the extreme variety of its terrain, its land and its microclimates.
Given to it's history, it's amazing that the Languedoc Roussillon region is becoming known as one of the world's most productive wine regions.

The land is suitable for cultivation of the wine. Each has its own characteristics. Winemakers have adapted their choice of varieties, their cropping patterns and their winemaking techniques are very diverse. So there is not today, in Roussillon, a vineyard, but lots of vineyards, not a wine, but a whole range of wines, each has its specificity, its character and its place in the world of gastronomy.
With plentiful local festivals, the renowned nude beaches along the coast and an intense love and appreciation of food and drink, the Languedoc Roussillon region has become known as a land worthy of eternal praise and solemn reverence in the wine world.
In the Roussillon, France's the largest wine producing region, is focuses primarily on reds, although there are classes of white, rose, sparkling and sweet wines as well.

Roussillon, famous for its fortified wines

Fortified Wines of Roussillon were appreciated in the most prestigious courts in Europe.

Since the creation of the “
Appellation d’origine contrôlée “(AOC), which translates as "controlled designation of origin", is the French certification granted to certain French geographical indications for wines. The fortified wines from Roussillon were recognized in this prestigious family : Banyuls, Banyuls Grand Cru, Rivesaltes, Muscat de Rivesaltes, Maury.
Fortified Wines age well in caves with high summer temperatures or outside, in oak barrels or in demijohn.
They are consumed as an aperitif during the dessert...

Roussillon producer of an infinite range of wines AOC

Diversification of grape varieties and the development of cool cellars have allowed in the 20th century the consecration of other AOC.

  • Côtes du Roussillon white, rosé and red
  • Côtes du Roussillon Aspres produce only red
  • Côtes du Roussillon Villages are exclusively red wines. 4 soils are distinguished: La Tour de France, Lesquerde, Caramany and Tautavel.
  • The Collioure with red wine rosé and white.

Today, about 2 / 3 of the wine area in the Roussillon are claimed AOC (now PDO : Protected Designation of Origin) defined in European Union law to protect the names of regional foods.) The variety of soils and the existence of 15 different highlights increase the diversity of wines from Roussillon.

What emerges is a highly nuanced range of dry red wines, white and rosé wines or simple wines with complex aromas appreciated by international wine lovers.
